1st Hungarian workshop in Szeged; Historical and ethnical heritage of the project area

Summary: This workshop aimed at Serbian and Hungarian experts, working in the social science and historical units of the project, establishing the conceptual framework for their research work and for preparing the expert’s materials. Participants agreed that from a historical perspective the Tisza valley is a multiethnic and multicultural region, with an economic and settlement structure that transformed drastically in the modern period, due to the impact of environmental, economic and political factors. In the course of the work the experts specified the geographical region that will be studied, defined the time schedule of research work and harmonised the system of criteria for the research. Within the defined spatial and time frame, the experts committed to doing research work and writing expert’s studies on the history of the environment, the region’s history, politics and public administration, ethnography and anthropology. The effects of human activities on the changes that have occurred in the natural geography of the Tisza will be examined as a separate line of study. Special attention is going to be paid to the impact of border changes on the public administration and on politics, and to how modernisation shaped the multiethnic settlement structure of the region.
