Summary: This workshop consisted of using case studies to examine the most important historic, geographic, anthropologic and ethnographic characteristics of the modern period history of the Tisza valley – those that can be important from a tourism perspective. Judit Raffai from the Hungarian Language Teacher Training Faculty (University of Novi Sad) analysed the ethnographic features of towns and villages in the Tisza valley, focusing on the differences and similarities in architecture and the built environment. László Gulyás (SZTE) gave a historical overview of the region, speaking about how its situation changed throughout the centuries, in the context of macroregions and states. Lajos Rácz (SZTE) introduced the effects of the river regulation works performed in the Tisza valley, and the changes in the region’s climate on the area’s natural environment, economy and society. The presentations were followed by a discussion, during which it was made clear that the global warming of recent years creates new challenges for the macroregion, and the decrease in the level of precipitation is likely to increase the value of the Tisza valley’s environmental and tourism characteristics. Participants also harmonised the methodology for mapping the region’s environmental, cultural and historical values, in order to establish the conditions for their better utilisation in tourism.
